Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer Before You Book

Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer

Booking your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make in the entire planning process. And yet most couples walk into that first conversation without knowing what to actually ask. You look at the portfolio, you love the vibe, and then you kind of just hope everything works out. We get it — it can feel awkward to grill someone you genuinely like.

But here is the thing. A great photographer is going to welcome every single one of these questions. Because a great photographer has great answers. And knowing those answers before you sign anything means you go into your wedding day with complete confidence in the team you chose.

We're Josh and Taylor, a husband and wife photography and videography team based in Central Pennsylvania, and we have answered every one of these questions more times than we can count. So we know which ones matter most and why. Use this list at every consultation and pay close attention to how each photographer responds — not just what they say but how they say it.

Questions About Their Experience and Approach

Will I actually work with you on my wedding day?
This is the first question and honestly the most important one. Some photography studios book weddings under one name and then send associate photographers on the actual day. There is nothing inherently wrong with that model but you deserve to know upfront whether the person whose work you fell in love with is the person who will actually be there. When you book JTR Media you get us. Josh and Taylor. Every single time.

How many weddings do you photograph per year and per weekend?
A photographer who shoots fifty weddings a year is going to approach your day differently than one who shoots twenty. Neither number is automatically better but knowing it helps you understand their capacity, their energy, and how much attention your wedding is going to get. Also worth asking, do they ever book more than one wedding on the same weekend? If so who covers yours?

Have you photographed at my venue before?
Venue familiarity makes a real difference. A photographer who knows your venue already knows where the best light falls, which corners of the property produce the most interesting images, and how to navigate the layout efficiently on a busy wedding day. If they have not been there before ask how they prepare for a new venue. The answer tells you a lot.

How would you describe your photography style?
You want to hear them describe it in their own words rather than just pointing at their portfolio. Do they say documentary and candid? Editorial and posed? A mix of both? Make sure their description matches what you are actually seeing in their work and what you are picturing for your own day.

Questions About What Is Included

What is included in your packages?
Coverage hours, edited image count, turnaround time, engagement session, online gallery, print release — get specific. Do not assume anything is included until you have confirmed.

Do you offer both photography and videography?
If having both matters to you — and we think it should — ask early. Booking a unified photo and video team means your coverage is completely coordinated from start to finish. No competing vendors, no miscommunication, no gaps in your story.

Can we order prints or albums through you?
Some photographers handle everything in house. Others hand you a gallery link and leave the rest to you. If having a physical album matters to you make sure your photographer offers that or can point you in the right direction.

How many photos will we receive and when?
Know what you are getting and when you are getting it before you book. Turnaround times vary widely across photographers and knowing the timeline helps you plan for everything from thank you cards to anniversary gifts.

Questions About Logistics and the Fine Print

What is your payment and cancellation policy?
Read the contract carefully and ask about this directly. What is the deposit amount? When is the final payment due? What happens if you need to reschedule or if something unexpected happens on either side? A professional photographer has clear answers to all of these.

Do you have backup equipment?
Every professional photographer should have backup camera bodies, lenses, and memory cards on hand. Equipment failure happens and how a photographer prepares for it tells you everything about their professionalism. The answer should always be yes.

What happens if you are sick or have an emergency on our wedding day?
This is a big one that couples almost never think to ask until it is too late. Ask specifically what their plan is. Do they have a network of trusted photographers they can call?

Are you insured?
Professional liability insurance protects you as much as it protects the photographer. Many venues actually require vendors to carry insurance and be able to provide proof. Always ask.

Will you help us build our wedding day timeline?
The best photographers do not just show up and start shooting. They work with you in advance to build a timeline that gives every part of the day the right amount of time and attention. If a photographer is not offering this as part of their process it is worth asking why.

One More Thing Worth Paying Attention To

Beyond the answers themselves pay attention to how the conversation feels. Do they ask you questions about your day or do they only talk about themselves? Do they seem genuinely interested in your story or does it feel transactional? Are they easy to communicate with?

Your photographer is going to be one of the most present people at your entire wedding day. You want someone who feels like a good fit as a human being, not just a skilled professional. Trust that instinct.
