This is the one couples almost never consider when they are touring venues and it is honestly one of the most exciting things to think about once you know what to look for.
Every venue has its own personality and that personality shows up in your photos. A bright white venue with floor to ceiling windows? Light and airy, dreamy, editorial. A warm candlelit barn with wooden beams? Moody, romantic, intimate. A grand cathedral with soaring ceilings? Dramatic and stunning in a completely different way. This one comes up on almost every wedding day and the venues that get it right make such a difference.
Having dedicated getting ready spaces for both partners — separate, comfortable, and ideally on or close to the venue property — sets the whole morning up for success. When both partners have their own space on site we can move between them efficiently, capturing detail shots, candid getting ready moments, and portraits in both spaces without any scrambling. The morning flows, everyone stays relaxed, and the coverage feels complete from the very first moments of the day.
When one or both partners are getting ready off site it is absolutely workable, plenty of our favorite Pennsylvania weddings have had exactly that setup. It just means building travel time into your coverage hours and making sure your timeline has enough breathing room to account for it.
When you are touring venues in Pennsylvania ask specifically about both getting ready spaces. The best ones have good natural light, enough room for the wedding party to spread out comfortably, and a layout that gives us room to move and photograph freely. That kind of space makes a genuine difference in your getting ready gallery and in how the whole morning feels.
Consider Whether Your Ceremony and Reception Are in the Same Location
A ceremony and reception at the same venue, or within easy walking distance, creates a beautifully seamless flow to the day. Guests move easily between spaces, the timeline stays tight, and from a photography and videography standpoint we are always exactly where we need to be without any logistical gaps.
When your ceremony and reception are at separate locations it can work wonderfully and some of our most stunning Pennsylvania weddings have involved a church ceremony followed by a reception venue across town. The key is building enough breathing room into the timeline to account for travel for guests, the wedding party, and your photo and video team. Planning for that travel time from the beginning means the day still feels unhurried and complete rather than rushed.

Think About the Ceremony Space Itself
Outdoor or indoor? This decision shapes your ceremony photos in a really meaningful way and both options are stunning when they are planned for intentionally.
Outdoor ceremonies in Pennsylvania can be absolutely breathtaking. Natural light, open skies, gorgeous landscape backdrops, when the conditions are right the images are some of the most memorable of the entire day. The one thing worth planning for is weather, because Pennsylvania spring and summer skies can be unpredictable. Having a solid backup plan in place means that if rain shows up your day keeps moving beautifully and if it does not you are even further ahead than you planned.
Indoor ceremonies bring weather certainty and their own kind of beauty. A ceremony inside a cathedral with soaring ceilings and stained glass windows is something completely different from a ceremony in a bright modern venue with floor to ceiling windows, and both are stunning in their own right. The space shapes the images and we love working with whatever the venue gives us.
Make Sure the Venue Matches Your Overall Vision

Your inspiration photos are a reflection of the venue as much as the photographer. The architecture, the landscape, the light, all of it comes from the location. So if every single photo on your inspiration board is from a Tuscan villa or a European manor but you are touring Pennsylvania barn venues, those two aesthetics are going to look different and knowing that early is actually really empowering. It means you can either shift your venue search toward properties that match your vision, or fall in love with your venue's actual aesthetic and let your inspo evolve around it.
When your venue and your vision are genuinely aligned it shows in every single image. The best approach is to let your inspiration guide your venue search from the beginning. Love the look of a winery wedding? Tour wineries. Love that grand hotel ballroom feel? Tour hotels. Love lush landscape backdrops? Look for properties with exactly that. This way you are set up for a wedding photo gallery that genuinely takes your breath away.
Ask About Vendor Restrictions Before You Book
One practical thing worth checking early in your venue search — vendor policies.
Some venues have a preferred vendor list and ask that you choose your photographer and videographer from it. Others welcome any licensed and insured vendor you choose. Knowing this before you book means you never end up in a situation where your dream venue and your dream photographer cannot work together.
Also worth asking about is any policies around lighting and photography equipment during the reception. Some venues have specific guidelines around flash photography or external lighting and we always want to know what we are working with before the wedding day so we can plan accordingly. The goal is always the same, making sure your reception coverage looks as beautiful as every other part of the day.
